Valley of Peace Mission Trip

Here we are at the farm of a friend of ours Paz and her two brothers. Right now they have cabbage growing but they do rotate the crops they plant. It's hot hard work all by hand.
In another area they are growing corn with cabbage in between. Some people plant beans in between the corn.
At times the boys and men will sleep out at the farm. Sometimes in a shelter and sometimes just under some trees.
It was very hot while we were there so we jumped in this little stream to cool off.

This bird is called a Carasow and is about the size of a turkey. In our village it is hunted alot for it's meat and there's not many left in the wild.
This is the Jabaru Stork. It's the biggest bird in the western hemisphere. It measures about 5 feet tall with a wingspan of aprox. 8 feet.
This is a real killer tree. Can you imagine trying to climb this!!
Ahh... the life of a jungle cat!

This was such a hot hot day and this waterfall and pool were very nice and cool. We were able to swim behind the little falls to sit and relax.
The jungle rivers (at least the shallow ones) are so very clear.
Isn't this a great shot!! I couldn't pass it up.
Ahoy there matey!!

I thought this flower was really neat. It doesn't even look real.
These ruins are called Lamani. This settlement was the longest inhabited jungle city in the Mayan empire here.
It looks, and is, very steep!!! Only the priests and the hiearchy would go up to the top. Back in their time these buildings would have been awe inspiring with their height and beautiful bright colors.
Yes it was very steep!!!

This was the first time I had ever seen a cashew growing on the tree. I had no idea that down here the people eat the fruit of the cashew much more than the seed that we eat.
If you look hard you'll be able to see the tiny little bats in this burned out stump.
We went to the Baboon Sanctuary and got close enough to these guys that we could have touched them. However you wouldn't want to do that!
These little guys are a very common sight down here. They are really neat creatures.

Jungle Kaylee!!! Swinging from vine to vine through the jungle!
This is called the Thousand foot falls and it is beautiful. You can't get very close but even from here it looks high.
These Hibiscus flowers are everywhere. Many people use these bushes as hedges around their yards. Aren't they beautiful?
A jungle hike!

There are a number of great caves in Belize. This one is about an hour and a half from our place. Once we got inside I turned around and snaped this. It doesn't show it really but we are quite a long ways down from ground level.
Inside was spectacular! It's a huge cave and seems to go on forever! It was really great.
There is an underground river that flows through this particular cave and the ancient Mayan people lived in these caves. They would have been a perfect dwelling place since they were hidden, it was nice and cool, and they had a constant supply of fresh water.
I thought this was a very unique formation.

This is a very common sight along the highways of Belize. This is a good way to make sure you'll be able to dry your clothes even in the wet season!
Belize is home to a large Mennonite community. There are two different groups. Here you can see an "Old order" Mennonite community. Here they use no machinery of any kind, no electricity, no radios etc. and they drive only horses and buggy's. The community is so peaceful and beautifully kept. They farm and have orchards as well. They are very industrious people.
As you can see the "Old Order" Mennonite people where very traditional clothing also. The women wear dark print dresses and long black stockings. In the outdoors they also wear black bonnets and shawls. The younger girls wear flowered print dresses in pretty colors. The men wear straw hats, dark pants with suspenders, and a long sleeve shirt. Both men and women usually wear dark, plain shoes also.
Their community's are in beautiful out of the way places.

Bike racing is huge here. We often meet a few riders when we are driving on the main highway. This particular day we encountered a major race.

Isn't he cute!!
There's nothing like swimming in a jungle river. Our friend Mark came down to visit us and we had a wonderful time showing him as much of the country as we could.
Crossing a jungle river.
Other ways to cross a jungle river!
